morganevan7 Low Dose Naltrexone cured my son's UC. His colonoscopy was UC or Crohns free after 1 year of treatment.
Got ulcerative colitis while on month long trip to mexico. it is 100% to me parasite related as the cause.
dnfisher Re: Specific Carbohydrate Diet — In the end, the Specific Carbohydrate Diet did not improve my ulcerative colitis. A modified paleo/elimination diet, did, however. I discuss this a lot on my site www.fishandforage.com. Diet can improve ulcerative colitis!
Re: Corticosteroids — Horrible side effects. It helped, but whenever I tried to stop taking it my symptoms would return. I would only ever take it as a last resort.
Re: Remicade — It saved my colon. I was about to have my colon removed when a doctor recommended I try Remicade. I got the infusions for about 6 years. I no longer need it. I have not needed any treatment for my Ulcerative Colitis in years.
Re: Delayed release Phosphytidylcholine — This is available by prescription only from Germany. Search Google scholar for the work of Dr. Wolfgang Stremmel at the University of Heidelberg.
Re: Arthritis — I have RA like symptoms but from the UC. I have it in large & small joints alike. It is bilateral & debilitating. Tried Methotrexate but couldn't stand the side effects (after 6 months). Did prednisone & now on Cimzia for 7 months. Have about 50% relief. It isn't enough for me. Am going to try low dose Naltrexone. Anyone else try LDN with good or bad results? Before I try it I must be off the Cimzia for 2 months. Scary.
Re: Corticosteroids — works great while I"m on them, but as soon as I try to taper off, symptoms return. A temporary solution.
Re: Remicade — Had bad allergic reactions to Remicade.
Re: Corticosteroids — What is a corticosteroid ? Is prednisone one ?
Re: Specific Carbohydrate Diet — The SCD is simple in concept: no starch (bread, potatoes, rice), and no disaccharides (sucrose, lactose). The only carbs you are allowed are glucose and fructose.
Easier to say than to do.
I have segmental colitis associated with diverticulitis (SCAD). I had a friend with bad Chron's--so bad they were threatening to remove his colon--and he had great results with this diet. He is off drugs and almost symptom free. I think this diet is doing me good. And, a fringe benefit, I've lost about 20 pounds (which my doctor was after me to lose anyway).
whichway Re: Corticosteroids — They seem to work but the side effects are just almost just as bad
mc515 Re: Mild anti-constipation supplement — My Eastern medicine physician said that UC was a constipation problem, so besides drinking his Chinese tea when I had a flair up, I added a mild anti-constipation supplement bought at a health food store when my symptoms abated and I am regulated to 1x day bowel movements.
dnfisher Re: Specific Carbohydrate Diet — For those interested visit breakingtheviciouscycle.info and read the book of the same title by Elaine Gottschall. I am a few months into the diet (taking no meds), but I cannot say with certainty how much I have improved. It is very strict and requires time to adapt it to your own body.
drf Re: Arthritis — mostly in my left index finger. i also notice mild arthritis pain that migrates around my body. very strange. my doctor says that arthritis associated with UC.
drf Re: Exercise — I now exercise 40 minutes per day (mostly walking). I have not noticed improvement in my syptoms. I have not tried aerobic exercise yet but that's next.
drf Re: Asacol — i took 6 tabs per day at the start. symptoms got steadily better until they completely disappeared after 6 weeks. Symptoms returned to nearly what they were 3 weeks later. increased dosage to max of 12 tabs a day and now symptoms vary barely acceptable and bad. very discouraging.
