The hard plastic mouth guard seems to lower the grinding during night compared to the soft rubber one.
I was plagued by severe bruxism since children. It stopped abruptly when I quit smoking a couple of years ago.

Re: Clicking/popping jaw — TMJ injury, when I wear my retainer regularly is really helps. Maybe the same as a mouth guard?
Re: Grinding teeth during sleep — I cracked 2 teeth which required 2 root canals and capping to fix. I now wear a mouth guard religiously every night.
