I had excruciating menstrual cramps since the very beginning. I was prescribed Naproxen sodium before it was available over the counter, and I'd have to add Ibuprofen on top of it. NSAIDs were my only relief- never tried the harder stuff.

I started eating grass fed butter in 2003 (at least 1 Tbsp per day for eating and cooking.) I noticed after several weeks that my cramps was milder, requiring less medication. After about 6 weeks, I was able to go without any medication at all.

In 2005, I had to go on a completely dairy free diet for 3 years for a suspected dairy allergy. The cramps gradually came back as bad as ever, regularly every month.

In 2007 with the help of a doctor, I identified the dairy allergy as limited to the whey fraction (lactalbumin and lactoglobulin proteins.) I added back the butter, and the cramps were completely eliminated again over a period of 1-2 menstrual cycles.

Eliminating the dairy whey proteins also cured my acne problem, since my acne inflammation was an allergic response.

I personally use Kerrygold butter, or the yellowest butter I can find. I don't know what the special ingredient is, but I am absolutely sold on it.

I'm very curious to know if others experience this benefit, but I'm afraid this news might cause a rush on my butter supply! Haha.

Re: Throbbing pain — My hands and feet throb. The chronic 24/7 pain starts at my elbows to my hands and my knees to my feet.

Re: IUD — My periods were already bad before getting an IUD (the copper one), this made them have an even heavier flow and even more pain. WORST EVER.

Re: Codeine — It's the only way I can deal with the pain, but I'm out for the day, in bed. Not such a great solution

Re: Omega 3 fatty acids — Maybe too soon to tell...sometimes it takes months to build up.

Re: NSAIDs (Ibuprofen) — I had to switch back to plain Tylenol, which only puts a dent in the pain, as ibuprofen & such mess up my stomach too much.

Re: Oral contraceptives — Some helped my periods, some worsened them. They worsened vulvodynia a lot, though.

Re: Exercise — I have to do this during the month, when the period hits I am in too much pain to walk much, let alone exercise.

Re: Heavy blood loss — Over the years this has changed - mine is now solid and I have no clue why.
